Rosa Burkard Chairperson

Rosa, an Active member of the American Translators Association (ATA) and ATA-certified in English to Spanish translation, is the chairperson of the Association and the main organizing force behind the Annual Conferences. She is also a past president of AAIT, having served in that post for four years.

Born in Italy and raised in Venezuela, Rosa, who has been a professional English-Spanish translator and consecutive/simultaneous interpreter since 1983, speaks Spanish (A - Native), English (B), Italian (C) and French (C). She has worked in the United States and Venezuela for numerous companies and organizations in both the public and private sectors, including the Venezuelan state-owned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), the Carter Center, and a variety of multilateral organizations. She is also a Georgia certified English–Spanish court interpreter and the co-founder of Language Ambassadors, LLC.

From March 2003 to September 2008, Rosa worked as a translator and interpreter for CDC Multilingual Services (CDC-MLS) in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to her translation and interpretation responsibilities, she was in charge of the CDC-MLS Health Glossary, participated in development of health-related materials in Spanish, served on the HIV English-Spanish Glossary Project team led by the Office of Minority Health Resource Center in Washington, and was a voice talent for public service announcements.

Rosa holds a master’s degree in intercultural communication from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California, a master’s degree in terminology from the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain, and an undergraduate degree in translation and interpretation from Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas. In addition, she is an instructor of Georgia State University’s translation and interpretation certificate program and has taught at her alma mater of Universidad Central de Venezuela.

Rosa has been an invited speaker on topics of interest for translators and interpreters on numerous occasions, including the International Terminology Summer School 2008 in Vienna, Austria, and Professional Development Day 2009 at the DeKalb International Center.

Rosa is also a longtime member of Colegio Nacional de Traductores e Intérpretes (CONALTI) in Venezuela, where she has held the positions of president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.
