    FINDING THE PARALLELS: INTERPRETING
    IN MEDICAL AND JUDICIAL SETTINGS

A conference by de la Mora Interpreter Training

Orlando, FL – June 2013 – Finding the Parallels: Interpreting in Medical and Judicial Settings explores the conversion points between medical and legal interpreting. This event targets health care and legal service providers who currently serve or plan to serve Limited English Proficiency and non-English speakers, as well as interpreting professionals interested in migrating in either direction. Subjects such as complianceliability, procedurestraining and certification among others will be discussed, and the event also offers training sessions. We have applied for continuing education credits (FL State Courts, NAJIT, ATA), and one Fernando A. Ortega Scholarship for Excellence is offered to eligible candidates.  The boutique event will be held August 16-18, 2013 in Orlando, FL.

The relevance of this event is well explained in the following excerpt published on Lexology (www.lexology.com):

Limited English Proficiency Policies Should Also Be Revisited - The requirements to provide appropriate auxiliary aids complement healthcare providers’ obligations to provide interpreter services for patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) as required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as well as the Joint Commission’s standards for accreditation. Accordingly, providers should consider revisiting their LEP policies at the same time they review and update their policies for communicating with patients who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Healthcare providers who do not currently have such comprehensive communications policies should consider developing them to ensure equal access to their services. (McGuire Woods LLP – Wake Up Call for Providers – Kottkamp and Taylormoore 4/25/13 - http://tinyurl.com/d7kouzf)

The cast of speakers includes renowned professionals from both medical and legal interpreting fields. They are de la Mora Interpreter Training founder Agustín de la Mora, Rob Cruz, Holly Mikkelson, Armando Ezquerra Hasbun, Giovanna Lester, Izabel Arocha, James Plunkett, Claudia Villalba, Natalya Mytareva, and Ed Hart, with in person and remote appearances.

About de la Mora Interpreter Training – The force behind the de la Mora Interpreter Training is Agustín de la Mora, founder. Since 1998, de la Mora Interpreter Training (www.interpreter-training.com/#) has served professionals by providing them training, educational opportunities and guidance. In keeping with its commitment, de la Mora brings this event to health care and legal stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition into the requirements of equal language access.

  • FCICE PREP - BOOT CAMP!!

    When:
    July 12-14, 2013
    Where:
    TBA
    Atlanta GA

Course Description: Students will engage in multiple rounds of rigorous simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, as well as sight translation, while the instructor listens to their renditions and observes their demeanor, style, and overall presentation. After each round of simultaneous there will be a critique and analysis session during which the group (and the instructor) will listen to recordings of the students in order to provide constructive feedback. The recordings will allow the instructor to pinpoint issues with each student's rendition, identify the appropriate corrective action, and advise students on how to improve their particular weaknesses (and capitalize on their strengths) by providing specific direction. For consecutiveinterpretation, the instructor will discuss various techniques that students can employ (on an individual or combined basis) to improve their consecutiveinterpretation skills. The sight translation component of the workshop will, again, focus on presentation skills. The instructor will share some very useful techniques that the students will be able to practice in order to render professional quality sight translations.

    Cost: 3-day ($ 595), 2-day ($450)

  • Translation Technology Workshop at the U of Maryland

This two-and-a-half-day workshop geared toward the professional translator will help attendees equip themselves with the technological solutions they need to succeed and with an understanding of how to implement those solutions. Experienced translators as well as newcomers into the field of translation will benefit from this workshop.

Day 1 will be focused on computer-aided translation (CAT) tools or translation environment tools (TEnTs). We will take an in-depth look at the pros and cons of the different solutions, including a comparison of desktop tools and online tools.

Day 2 will continue with the exploration of translation environment tools in the morning and focus on complex file formats and their processing in the afternoon. This will range from desktop publishing formats to XML-based formats and software resource files. In the process, attendees will encounter a range of tools and processes for dealing with these formats.

Day 3 will deal with data resources and machine translation. We will examine whether and how machine translation can play a role as a tool for professional translators and how other data can be accessed and used in the modern translation workflow.

The ATA is awarding 10 CE points for the completion of this workshop.

The deadline to enroll is coming up soon (June 30), so I encourage you to register soon if this sounds relevant to you.

You can find the registration forms and other information on the lower half of
